Caught up with my old Basketballing buddy Mal Padgett recently to explore his life/musical story. This podcast tracks Mal's early years growing up on a farm outside Cobram to moving to Melbourne to study Graphic Design at the hottest Design studio in Australia - Swinburne Uni in the late 70s. Along the way he did a stint as a tour guide circling eastern and central Australia - a few times in the same year. When I met Mal he was a multi-media specialist at AAV studios in South Melbourne among a creative brat pack of edgy animators, graphic designers and music technicians. They also played fun Basketball. Mal also spent time in Taiwan doing multi media installations. Through all this, Mal's radios, reel-to-reels, walkmans and mini-disc players were close at hand providing the musical soundtrack to these experiences. Along the way I throw in some musical selections also.
Mal's choices include Morelenbaum²/Sakamoto (Ryuichi), Underworld, The Reels, XTC, Led Zeppelin, Nils Frahm, Devo, The Church, Rick Wakeman/Yes, Roxy Music, The Rolling Stones, Supertramp, The Human League, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, T.Rex, Jethro Tull, The Flying Lizards & Jimmy Little.
Scott's choices - Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Supertramp, Dry Cleaning, David Bowie, The Northern Folk, Led Zeppelin, The Reels, Carla Geneve, The Rolling Stones, RVG & XTC.
